On its own, the Clearaudio Champion Basic is a typical Clearaudio turntable, a beautiful blend of clear and frosted acrylic and stainless steel. But the Champion Basic is also the first step of an upgrade path, first to the Champion Level 1 with the addition of a second plinth, and ultimately to the Champion Level 2 with a larger platter and bearing.

The turntable chassis and platter of each Champion model is made of GS-acrylic and aluminium, a composite construction chosen for its mechanical and acoustic properties. The inverted bearing consists of polished and hardened steel and phosphored bronze. The frosted acrylic platter (30 mm thick on the Basic) is driven via a special material drivebelt by a motor decoupled from the chassis.

Two speeds (33⅓ and 45 rpm) are selected by changing the pulley position of the drivebelt. A pulley for 78 rpm is available by special order.
