Clearaudio is the hi-fi industry's leading proponent of tangential tonearms, which trace the grooves of a record the way the grooves were originally cut - in a straight line. The Clearaudio TQ-1 has evolved from the famous Souther TQ-1 tonearm, invented by American Lou Souther in 1980. Since acquiring the Souther company in 1986, Clearaudio has improved and refined the original design, and now manufactures it at its German factory.

Records are cut with a linear system and only linear designs can guaranty adequate error-free reproduction. The TQ-I has been in the Clearaudio line since the mid 1980s. In this time it has evolved, but has been the foundation of all research and development, which has lead to such designs such as the Master TQ-I. The newest version of this design, the TQ-I represents all of the best design philosophies to date.
